US Army MAVNI Pilot Program Enlists Burmese Speakers

MAVNI – The Defense Department has authorized the U.S. Army to implement, under the Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest (MAVNI) program, a test that permits the enlistment of certain legal aliens into the U.S. Army. To be eligible for consideration, you must be legally present in the United States, and able to provide a passport, I-94 card, I-797 form, your employment authorization document or other government issued documents proving your legal presence in the United States.

Critical Languages Research Analyst ProgramPaid Internships for Summer 2012

The U.S. Intelligence Community (IC) has several unclassified open source analysis units in the Washington, DC area to conduct research related to national security issues.  We are looking for undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students who can conduct native language research on the internet, apply social science research methods to identify social and political trends, and critically analyze and present information.
Students majoring in the following areas are encouraged to apply:  Middle Eastern Studies, Persian Studies, South Asian Studies, Asian Studies, African Studies, Comparative Politics, International Relations, Intelligence Studies, National Security Studies, Economics, Political Economy, Cultural Anthropology, Comparative Sociology, Demography, Defense Studies, Social Psychology, Public Policy, History, Political Islam, Nuclear Engineering/Physics, Computer Science/Engineering, Political Geography, Library Science, Geographic Information Systems, and other science and technology fields.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Fluency in written Arabic, Chinese Mandarin, Dari, Georgian, Hausa, Hindi, Kurdish, Pashto, Russian, Somali, Spanish, Turkish, Turkmen, Urdu, or Uzbek required. Advanced listening comprehension is also required.
• Excellent research and oral and written communication skills.
• Excellent analytic/critical thinking skills.• Advanced internet proficiency.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a close team environment.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong academic background (3.0 GPA or higher).
• Completion of at least the sophomore year of college by the beginning of summer 2012
• U.S. citizenship required*
*The work performed will involve unclassified research and will not require full security clearance processing.  However, each selected individual will undergo some security processing.  Final selection for the program is contingent upon the successful completion of the security vetting process.  The security vetting process will not equate to eligibility for access to classified information and only allows participation in the Critical Languages Summer Research Analyst Program.

COMPENSATION:
This will be a paid position for a 40 hour work week for a maximum of 10 weeks.  The hourly rate will be commensurate with education and experience.  There are no benefits other than free parking.  Work location is not easily accessible by public transportation.

• Letter describing your qualifications and interest in the position.
• Writing sample in English (maximum of 5 pages).
• Contact information to include name, telephone number, and email address for two academic references, one of whom must be able to verify your language skills.
• Unofficial copy of your college transcript(s) – a download from the institution’s website is acceptable for initial consideration.  Official transcripts will be required at a later date.
Note:  Successful candidates will be required to pass a written translation test in his or her critical language.

ONI produces meaningful maritime intelligence and moves that intelligence rapidly to key strategic, operational, and tactical decision-makers.  Our integrated workforce of civilians, active duty and Reserve naval professionals supports combat operations and provide vital information for planning America’s Defense against maritime threats at home and around the world. We produce maritime intelligence on seaborne terrorism, weapons and technology proliferation, narcotics and smuggling activities that directly supports joint warfighters, the U.S. Navy, civil and national decision makers and agencies. ONI is a core element of Global Maritime Intelligence Integration whose goal is complete Maritime Domain Awareness.
